Artist Statement
"Non-functional One-of-a-Kind
Raku Vessels"
I produce one-of-a-kind pieces for
major art collectors.
All
of my work is thrown on a potter’s wheel. I use a white stoneware clay
body with very little grog. As I throw a piece it may take up to an hour
to complete since I don't do any trimming. I believe the pot should
reflect the true shape or identity as it is thrown and not after it is
trimmed to discover it. The pot is now ready to come alive and develop
its own personality. The design I carve will reflect what I see as the
soul of the vessel. Much of my work is geometric and complex in design.
This reflects the true nature of mankind, beautiful but complex.
I use a calipers and a compass to lay out the variety of patterns that I
see in each vessel. The calipers measure the spaces for the circle
patterns. The compass draws the circles on. Depending how you overlap
the circles you get the different patterns. These measurements must be
exact, since a one millimeter mistake will compound itself as each row of
the pattern progresses. After the pattern is all laid out I will cut the
negative spaces with handmade tools that are designed specifically for
what I do. After this many things are done... bands added or sections
carved away. Final touches such as dots are added to finish the piece.
Each piece is fired with such raw chemicals as rutile, iron and copper
oxide washes and slips to give the vessels their earthy tones.
